Teen Bloggers

Since you are currently reading a blog (and we thank you for that!), we assume you understand and appreciate blogs. Well, how about blogs written by kids, tweens and teens!? Isn’t that inspiring? That kids are taking the initiative to establish a routine, express and opinion and do some research! What lovely concepts those are!

Here’s a few we’ve found of interest:

www.Lights-Camera-Jackson.com. A 13 year old movie critic! This blogger has even won an Emmy already!

www.17AndBaking.com. A current college student (though she began the blog pre-college years) who enjoys backing and blogging about it!

www.TheStyleRookie.com. This blog began at the blogger’s ripe old age of 11! It’s a fashion blog! Vogue, here she comes!

Enjoy!

Interactive Books for Your Creative Kid!

How’s this for a fabulous book summary:

Dear Reader,

One dark and stormy night, author Keri Smith found some strange scattered pages abandoned in a park. She collected and assembled them, trying to solve the mystery of this unexpected discovery, and now, she’s passing the task on to you, her readers.

I collected and assembled them, trying to solve the mystery of this unexpected discovery, and am now passing the task on to you.

Your mission is to become the new author of this work. You will continue the research and provide the content. In order to complete the task, you will have to undergo some secret intelligence training, which is included in this volume. Since no one knows what lies ahead, please proceed with caution, but know…this book does not exist without you.

Yours truly,

For the Love of Poetry!

Poetry is not only a joy to read, but can be so fun to write. Sharing that joy with kids can seem overwhelming as some poetry is geared solely to more mature readers.

For some funny poetry as well as poetry contests, check out http://www.gigglepoetry.com/.

Smencils!

No, not pencils. . . SMENcils! Give them as a practical Halloween treat! Or perhaps stocking stuffers for the holidays? Or just cuz you want ‘em!

They are made from 100% recycled newspaper and plastic, and then dipped in fun scents!

How it works: Sheets of newspaper are tightly rolled around the #2 graphite writing cores until pencils of typical thickness are formed. Then they’re hardened – allowing them to be sharpened just like wood pencils. Next, they are soaked with our gourmet liquid scents (made by an award winning fragrance company). Once they’re dry, they attach the erasers and apply the stickers around them that identify which scent was infused into each Smencil. Lastly, they put each Original Smencil into its own corn-based biodegradable Freshness Tube!

Fun fact: On average, 430 Smencils are made from a single edition of the Sunday New York Times!

Take a trip to “Pooh Corner”…

Today is Winnie the Pooh Day in celebration of the books’ author, A.A. Milne. Use today to revisit those beloved stories with your kids and share your favorite quotes or memories from these stories below. Here’s one of ours, simple and sweet:

Piglet sidled up to Pooh from behind.

“Pooh!” he whispered.

“Yes Piglet?”

“Nothing” said Piglet, taking Pooh’s paw. “I just wanted to be sure of you.”

-A.A. Milne

Father’s Day Crafts!

Father’s Day is just around the corner and something fun and special to give dad is a creative creation made by two little hands (and maybe a couple bigger hands for supervision) Here are some suggestions of projects that dad will really show dad how great he is:

*Create a picture frame out of popsicle sticks and glue or sturdy cardboard and decorate it with glitter, feathers, sequins, marker drawings, pipe cleaners, buttons, etc. when the frame is dry, pick out a special photograph of dad with their child or just the child maybe from a vacation or birthday.
*Work together on planning a meal for dad using his favorite foods. For a little personalization, think of funny names for the dishes like, “Steveroni and Cheese,” “Joel-o,” or “Frankberry Shortcake” etc. Then prepare a pretty menu for him and work as a team to make the special dinner.
*Help your child write out a list of reasons why they think their dad is great. For the technologically inclined, you can record a short video of your child reciting this list on your computer and then email so it’s in dad’s inbox on Father’s Day morning. He will have a virtual greeting card/poem that is both green and easily accessible to remind him all year round why he’s a cool guy.
*Make a coupon book of fun things to do with dad. Some examples could be “Go To The Movies Together,” “Extra Hugs All Day,” and “1 Foot Rub.” Make sure to include a couple of dad’s chores for older kids like “1-time Take Out The Garbage” or “2-times Wash The Dishes.” These will make dad both laugh and smile.
