March 19-March 23 is Musicals in Our Schools Week – an annual event held the third full week of March in honor of both Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s birthdays (March 22).

CELEBRATE: Musical theater groups are asked to schedule a free public performance during the week. As soon as you know your performance date, time and location, post your event information at: www.facebook.com/musicalsinourschools.
EDUCATE: Elementary, Middle and High Schools in need of a musical theater program may apply to become a part of “NBC’s ‘Smash’: Make A Musical” initiative at www.juniortheaterproject.org/smash-make-a-musical-apply.
PARTICIPATE: Share a story of how your life or your child’s life has been positively impacted by a musical at: www.facebook.com/musicalsinourschools.
MOTIVATE: Volunteer, buy tickets, or take out an ad in a program for your local school musical.
ADVOCATE: Write a letter to the editor in support of musicals in our schools. Check out the The President’s Committee on the Arts And the Humanities “Reinvesting in Arts Education Winning America’s Future Through Creative Schools” for support information.
APPRECIATE: Send cupcakes or a letter of appreciation to an arts-friendly teacher, principal, or administrator.
Shakespeare for Kids

Classical theatre – not an easy topic to get your children involved in, but certainly not impossible. Do your kids love the classic kids’ series, The Berenstain Bears?! Do they also love live theatre? Check out this live show of The Berenstain Bears. Now in NYC!
Following a a 35-week national tour, the Berenstain Bears come to New York City for a limited summer engagement of The Berenstain Bears LIVE! in Family Matters, the Musical. Devanand Janki has directed and choreographed the production, which will play the Manhattan Movement and Arts Center, June 25-September 4, with an opening on July 3.
Adapted from the classic children’s books by Stan and Jan Berenstain and approved by the authors themselves, the show brings everyone’s favorite bear family to musical life, with an original score by Michael Borton and a book by Borton and Michael Slade.
Jim Henson Exhibit
Do your kids love Kermit the Frog? Do YOU love Kermit? For New Yorkers, this is your chance to see him and the history of Jim Henson’s genius on display. From now until Jan 16th, the Museum of the Moving Image offers “Jim Henson’s Fantastic World” exhibit. Among other things on display, visitors can see the original Kermit puppet as well as Jim’ original drawings of Beaker. Hours and prices vary.
