When meeting a brand new family…I take some time to really talk to the children and feel out what their passions are. Last week I was with an 8 year-old girl and her 6 year-old brother. She was very artistic and I realized as we were drawing how much interest she had in fashion design. Her brother loved math. We made an upscale clothing store for them with her “American Girl Dolls” clothing. We layed out all of the dolls’ clothes out on the table and created some of our own styles. She drew some designs in a notebook that we pretended was the clothing catalog for clothes we didn’t have “in the store.” We made price tags for all the clothes and her brother was the cashier (we used real money for him to practice with). He drew the signs for the store and kept track of the merchandise. I came in as the very interested customer buying clothes for my little girl (one of the American Girls Dolls). The children both felt a sense of accomplishment and had fun while learning!
