Katy C.

Three Words that Best Describe Katy: Vibrant, Curious, Loving

Artistry and Special Skills: Musical theatre, dancing, singing, acting, circus skills/aerial arts, guitar, piano, writing, crafting

Katy is a California-grown, nature-loving, musically-inclined now-New Yorker. Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, she always loved singing and dancing, and jumped at her first chance to get up onstage by herself at a family camp’s talent show, singing Meet Me in St. Louis into the too-tall microphone at two.  Katy received her BFA in Musical Theatre from Emerson College and has spent time outside of NYC with regional and touring companies all over the US since then. Katy also works as a teaching assistant for Mark Morris Dance Group’s Special Kids Dance outreach programming for kids with disabilities and is also a movement specialist with DreamStreet NYC, a non-profit theatre company for adults with special needs. She hopes to eventually pursue additional schooling in Arts Therapy or a related area that that puts artistic skill and interest towards making a serious difference in the lives of other people.

Childcare Experience: Katy has nearly ten years of experience working with kids in different capacities. She first began as a mother’s helper for families on her block as a Counselor in Training for local theatre camps in the SF Bay Area where she grew up. She continued to work up through a range of positions there and served as a Youth Coordinator. In college, she took advantage of a wonderful preschool intervention program called Jumpstart through Americorps to gain more experience in child development and education. One of her partner children in that program had just been diagnosed with Autism and she took a close interest in working with him and watching him develop and gain confidence as techniques for communicating and cooperating were successful. Upon moving to New York City, she began babysitting proper, first providing after-school care for one family of two elementary school girls four days per week, and others for occasional date nights and needs. She also works as a teaching artist for the Pineapple Explorers Club, leading music and dance classes around the boroughs for infants and toddlers ages 0-3 years.

Personal Interests: Besides theatre, Katy loves to write music, cook and bake, exercise, and learn new things. She speaks some French but would like to keep improving. She loves writing music and poetry, and is trying to build her skills and confidence as a potential author and playwright. She enjoys puzzles and games – nights with cards and board games are frequent with her friends even in adulthood. She also is passionate about social justice and changing this world (the planet and life for the people on it) for the better.
